"I rate the Submariner as the best hip hop producer in the country." - DJ Mu (Fat Freddy's Drop)

INJURY RESERVE

injuryreserve.jpg

ASTRAL PEOPLE and Handsome Tours are excited to announce Injury Reserve for their first ever Australia and New Zealand tour this June 2019.

Injury Reserve play Auckland's Neck of the Woods on Saturday 8 June.

The rap trio from Phoenix have started the year off with a bang, dropping track 'Jawbreaker' in January and now they’re back with new single 'Jailbreak The Tesla feat. Amine'.

Injury Reserve, who recorded their debut mixtape in a dentist's office (and titled it 'Live from the Dentist Office'), have had an interesting journey from the USA suburbs to a coveted "A MINUS" from Robert Christgau, the "Dean of American rock critics," in his column for Noisey. From playing house shows to being played on Beats 1 Radio by Ebro. How did it all happen? What makes producer Parker Corey and rappers Stepa J. Groggs and Ritchie With a T special?

For Complex, it's their boundary-pushing, "DIY weirdness." For Billboard, their fashion sense and fearless honesty. Pigeons and Planes admires their group dynamic, calling them "one of the best new groups in hip-hop," while Mass Appeal nods to their cinematic vision. Anthony Fantano's interest in their ability to balance tradition with innovation is well-documented on the Needle Drop, where he published 8/10 reviews of 'Live from the Dentist Office' and last year's 'Floss'. The latter, a major breakthrough for the group with features from Cakes da Killa and Vic Mensa, is energetic, refined, and in Christgau's words, "the most unpretentious hip-hop you ever heard."

They moved their studio from the Phoenix dental office where Corey’s grandfather practices to a house in Altadena, California. Following a sold out world tour, they inked a new deal with legendary A&R Hip-Hop as part of Loma Vista Recordings.

Fresh off the back of a huge SXSW show, Injury Reserve will be bringing their unique sound with their trademark energy to our antipodean shores.

This tour will mark the 20th anniversary of Concord Dawn, the drum and bass project that showed New Zealand (and the world) that with a bit of luck, anybody with questionable humour and good snares could release music on the scenes biggest labels and tour the world.

DIM & DASTARDLY

DIM.jpg

Your favourite audio reprobates, Dim Shady and The Dastardly Bounder, have been given access to the amazing sound system at NOTW for the night. There goes the neighbourhood…

Just who are these fine gents who play filthy beats?

Dim and Dastardly have been Splore stalwarts since New Zeland's favourite festival started and have been responsible for shaking the Lucky Star to its funky foundations for the last few years.

Dim Shady will take you on a wonky journey through eclectic low slung disco, dero funk and dance floor ready electronica. Originally hailing from Ol’ Blighty and otherwise known as Guy Johnson, Dim has been playing at festivals and parties all over the world since 1993. Dim brings a touch of finesse to every set he plays guaranteeing your pleasure on the dance floor.

When the Dastardly Bounder takes over a sound system he plays a funktronic sound, brimming with ear twisters and gob-smacking-grooves. The music he chooses for his DJ sets feature hints of house, dabs of disco, and touches of techno. In other guises, this bounder is Jamie Larnach, co-founder of Entrain and Splore. Jamie has had the privilege of DJing every Splore to date and has a depth and breadth of music rarely seen in these parts.

LIQUID LOWDOWN PRESENTS KRAKATOA

liquid.jpg

The Liquid Lowdown proudly presents krakota, (Hospital Records) Tokyo Prose, Chiccoreli, Skelta, Mittz & Merks. Hosted by Jay Double

KRAKOTA (Hospital Records)

As one of the new breed of producers making waves from the coast, it’s fair to say Bournemouth based Sebastian Inwood, aka Krakota, has made a strong and steady incline during his drum & bass career to date. A career started aged 15 when, like many teenagers, he was drawn to DJ’ing after initially finding his musical feet playing the drums and piano. It was in 2006 when the music making bug first grabbed a hold of Seb, leading to nights spent holed up in his home studio learning the basics and honing his skills.

Fast forward to 2016 and he signed exclusively to one of the biggest D&B labels around in Hospital Records and released his debut album 'Strange System' to much acclaim. With follow up projects already under way and a DJ diary packed with shows across the continent, you can be sure there will be no way of escaping Krakota’s bass heavy, break laden productions any time soon.

UXL EP RELEASE PARTY ( WITH IJEBU PLEASURE CLUB AND MORE GUESTS!)

UXL EP RELEASE.jpg

UXL’s 2019 EP ‘The Migrant Mind’ drops in March, and a stunning lineup of some of Auckland’s finest afrocentric artists and DJs are descending on Neck of the Woods on Saturday 30th to celebrate.

IJEBU PLEASURE CLUB
UNCHAINED XL
MO MUSE
BLACK SUNDAY
DJ TIDO
FUNKSTERISM

***LIMITED Early Bird's available for $10!***

UNCHAINED XL is a Nigerian Kiwi Hiphop artist and producer with a unique, afrocentric sound easily recognizable as his own. 2018 saw UXL’s reach expand globally, as he toured the UK with shows in London, Bristol, Sheffield, Leeds and Cardiff, performing alongside artists such as Mungos HiFi, Afro Cluster and Eva Lazarus. Drawing inspiration from artists such as Fela Kuti, Jidenna and M.anifest, UXL and his live band deliver a highly energetic, passionate performance that will leave you searching for more.

IJEBU PLEASURE CLUB takes you to Nigeria in 1987, where a small town Afrobeat band have just been told they need to play American top 40 hits to keep their nightclub gig. They don’t own any of the records, but they’re going to give it a try. Mashing up the music you remember (and some that’s best forgotten) with the Nigerian funk style of Fela Kuti, and about a dozen musicians, this band will surprise and delight, showing you that all pop music comes from mother-Africa.

MO MUSE is the “Everyman” of New Zealand Hip-Hop. Known for his conscious and relatable content, Muse delivers break-neck party anthems with his raw and energetic presence. Nevertheless, underneath the glitz is the heart of a young African individual with a dream and a pen. His undeniable level of self-awareness along with his willingness to be vulnerable with his listeners is what sets his music apart from his peers.

Supported by the powerful rhythms of Pan-African percussion group Black Sunday, plus DJ Tido and Funksterism spinning all the greatest afrofunk gems, this lineup is set to deliver the most electric, dance-worthy afrofunk and hiphop crossover Auckland city has seen yet.

Hot Potato Band

https://www.facebook.com/events/258753211468219/

hotpotatoband.jpg

Over the past 4 years, Hot Potato Band has seen an unprecedented evolution. Beginning their journey as roving street performers, the 10 piece band from Sydney, Australia have been twice around the the literal and figurative block. Like a muscle they have exercised their musicianship and showmanship which is the likely reason they leave lasting impressions on festivals and audiences.

Although difficult to describe their genre, HPB continues to compile their arsenal of songs inspired by Pop, Funk, Ska, Reggae and bound by the classic sounds of New Orleans brass bands.

The bands unique sound is built on the backs of three drummers and a sousaphone, along with an array of horns covering catchy chorus lines and providing a beautiful harmonic cloud for Ben (vocalist) to float above. They are a band never to shy from a good time.
