The Boog

It's the first Boog of the new year and we are ready to DANCE. This month we're enlisting Sumo Sui to join the lineup with your Boog residents - Frank Booker Lucky Lance and Hudge (The Uptown Boogie) - all playing 80s boogie from 10PM till late.

Also we’ll be raising it up to celebrate one of the founders of Neck of the Woods (and all round good egg) Josh Moore’s 40th bday. Not for beginners lol...

The Boog is Neck of the Woods' very own in-house club night - a happy, hedonistic throwback to the late 70s and early 80s and the music hiphop was birthed out of - disco, funk and soul but most of all, boogie. Every month we bring together some of the best DJs and selectors from all over the music scene to set the dance floor on fire with their favourite boogie tunes.

The Boog is all about good vibes on the dance floor and a room full of swaying bodies with enough space for everyone, so go ahead and leave any bad buzz at the door.

Beats People Movement* are proud to present

Compa rose to fame in 2011 following his infamous bootleg of Mavado’s ‘Dem A Talk’, completely self-released on vinyl it went on to sell out worldwide in a single week. Soon after, and at just 21 years of age, he'd been signed to Mala's Deep Medi Musik - perhaps the most revered seal of approval in true dubstep circles. In a review of that record, Boomkat described Compa as the "keeper of dubstep's darkest light". After signings to other respected labels such as Boka Records, Artikal Music and Kokeshi, his follow-up on Deep Medi Musik was titled ‘Truth In Sound’ - an insight as to his mission within the music.

Compa launched his own imprint CPA Records last year, featuring a collaboration with grime pioneer Footsie of the infamous Newham Generals, with the aim of further diversification as a producer and label boss. Mixmag described the release as a "hard-as-nails war dub" which "combines elements of grime and bass". With a sound that is perpetually nostalgic, yet equally refreshing and heavy enough to shock the toughest of sound systems, Compa’s music displays a binary relationship between foundation sound homage and perpetual forward motion in thought. Spacious textures, heavily built sub-frequencies and intricate execution of minimalism are but a few hallmarks of his ever-evolving repertoire.

Compa’s productions have received acclaim and support from revered tastemakers such as Mary Anne Hobbs, Gilles Peterson, BBC Radio 1’s Toddla T and 1Xtra's MistaJam, reggae and soundclash legend David Rodigan, drum and bass leading lights Chase and Status, dubstep don Mala and grime aficionado Sir Spyro among others. Since Compa's debut tour of North America in 2014 he has toured the globe extensively reaching Australia and New Zealand again this year as well as Outlook Festival in Croatia, Echo Park festival in Shanghai and Webster Hall in NYC. Compa’s trajectory continues to go from strength to strength, recently launching his club brand Compa Presents on Boiler Room TV to a live audience of over 100,000 viewers. A connoisseur of sound, Compa remains true to the roots of the genre and is one of the only remaining 100% vinyl and dubplate DJs on the international circuit.

Pato Entertainment Presents:

AARADHNA - Winter's End NZ Tour

Fri Sep 28th NAPIER - Cabana
Sat Sep 29th WHAKATANE - Boiler Room
Fri Oct 5th MT MAUNGANUI - Totara St
Thu Oct 11th AUCKLAND - Neck Of The Woods
Fri Oct 12th CHRISTCHURCH - Club Tavern
Sat Oct 13th WELLINGTON - San Fran

One of Aotearoa’s foremost soul and R’n’B singers, Aaradhna, is embarking on a six-date tour, giving Kiwi fans one last chance to see her live before she takes time out to write and record new music.

It’s Aaradhna’s most extensive tour of New Zealand in recent years and is aptly titled the ‘Winter’s End Tour’, marking the end of an era and the next chapter in her remarkable journey.

The award-winning Aaradhna is one of the country’s most distinguished singer and songwriters. She’s been a familiar face - and voice - in the local and international scene since featuring on Adeaze’s chart-topping song ‘Getting Stronger’. She went on to carve out her own path, releasing several critically acclaimed albums, including 2012’s TREBLE & REVERB, which spawned the hits ‘Wake Up’ and ‘Lorena Bobbit’.

She followed it with 2016’s BROWN GIRL, which earned her the award for ‘Best Female Solo Artist’ at the NZ Music Awards and four awards at the 2017 Pacific Music Awards, including the ‘Best Pacific Female Artist Award’ and ‘Best Pacific Music Album’.

The record was praised in publications and blogs around the world, including The Guardian, which said: “BROWN GIRL resonates with Aaradhna’s deep-felt pride in her heritage and roots, a pride that is tempered with an almost solemn joy. Sometimes the music can unsettle – witness the tribal percussion on the too brief Welcome to the Jungle – but mostly it reassures, in that charming, effortless rocksteady way she used to such effect on the P-Money produced 2012 album Treble & Reverb”.

For Aaradhna, the ‘Winter’s End’ tour is symbolic of one door closing, and another opening. It also gives the Kiwi singer the chance to celebrate the successes of the last few years with those who’ve helped her along the way - her loyal and devoted fans!

Joining Aaradhna on all six dates is special guest, stunning soul singer EMILY MULI

The Revenge (UK)

[Roar Groove, Glasgow]
Frank Booker
T Rice

Roar Groove label head and 6th Borough Project (Official) member, Graeme Clark aka The Revenge is heading to Auckland for his debut NZ performance at Neck of the Woods.

All the way from the UK, The Revenge has spent the last fifteen years curating and cultivating quality disco flecked house and his remixes and edits have been a staple of discerning DJ's crates for many years. He has a gift for crafting forward-thinking and inspiring cuts although his work pays fitting tribute to the past.

One of the most prolific producers of the last 10 years, if dubby deep house and highly prized disco re-edits are your kind of things then come dance to a master of it.

Of course, his precocious skillset doesn’t stop there. Variety is the spice of life, and from tracks that defined the nudisco movement around the end of last decade (his collaboration with Craig Smith’s ‘The Soul Part II’ in 2009) to EPs such as ‘Body Fusion’ and ‘Incredible Shellsuit’, both on his newest successful imprint ‘Roar Groove’, Clark’s bountiful career has seen him release on an abundance of illustrious labels. These include his own DFA, also Pokerflat, Needwant, My Favorite Robot and his own former imprint the much admired Instruments Of Rapture, making him a sine qua non in any aficionado’s record collection.

He also boasts a strong reputation for deep, dark and twisted killer DJ sets. Whether home, as a firm favourite at Glasgow’s iconic Sub Club, or away, be it Tresor (Berlin), Sankeys (Manchester), Lola Club (Shanghai), Space (Ibiza), Panther Room (NYC), he provides charismatic live performances, with a deft skill for reading a room just right and filling a dancefloor.

Teamed up with Friends & Whanau then you know this will be a jam! Djs Frank Booker, Hudge and T Rice will complete the bill.

$20 Advance tickets available from Under The Radar.
